Types of Revelations:
Imaam Bukhari رحمه الله said:
Chapter: How the Divine Inspirations started:
Narrated `Aishah (the mother of the faithful believers) رضي الله عنها that Al-Harith bin Hisham رضي الله عنه asked Allaah's Apostle صلى الله عليه وسلم: “O Allaah's Apostle! How is the Divine Inspiration revealed to you?” Allaah's Apostle replied: “Sometimes it is (revealed) like the ringing of a bell, this form of Inspiration is the hardest of all and then this state passes off after I have grasped what is inspired. Sometimes the Angel comes in the form of a man and talks to me and I grasp whatever he says.” `Aishah added: Verily I saw the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم being inspired Divinely on a very cold day and noticed the sweat dropping from his forehead (as the Inspiration was over). [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (2)]
Shaikh Ibn Baaz رحمه الله commented on the above Hadeeth:
“And that is the weightiest form of revelation as Allaah تعالى says: {Verily, We shall send down to you a weighty Word} [Surah al-Muzzammil (73): 5]
Revelations were basically of three types; two of them have been mentioned in this Hadeeth and the third: blowing into the heart (as mentioned in another Hadeeth): “The Holy Spirit (Jibreel) blew into my heart that no one will die till he gets his sustenance (that was decreed for him)…”*
All these three revelations were delivered through an intermediary. And there is a fourth, directly (from Allaah without any intermediates), like how the prayers were made obligatory when he (the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم) was raised to the Heavens. The inspirations in sleep are the fifth type.
The inspirations in dreams are revelations which are not specific only to the Prophets but it is also for other than them: {And We inspired the mother of Moosa (telling): "Suckle him (Moosa)} [Surah al-Qasas (28): 7]”
